Disabled toilet Obtain universal key

Source: BUS Rheinland-Pfalz

Do you have a disability and want to use accessible toilets? In 1986, the "Club Behinderter und ihrer Freunde e.V." (CBF) Darmstadt developed a concept for a standardized key for disabled toilets at freeway service stations, in cities, universities, train stations and many other buildings. The club distributes the so-called Euro toilet key in Germany and other European countries. It can be used at over 12,000 locations (as of 2017). A list of the relevant toilet facilities is available on "Der Locus". The CBF is careful to ensure that the key is only given to people who are dependent on accessible toilets. In addition, the key can be used nationwide for the use of numerous barrier-free entrances, stair lifts etc. to guarantee people with a disability the greatest possible independence in their everyday lives.

People who can generally obtain a universal key are

  • Blind and visually impaired people
  • people with severe walking difficulties
  • Wheelchair users
  • people with a stoma
  • Severely disabled persons who are in need of assistance and may require an assistant
  • Multiple sclerosis sufferers
  • Crohn's disease sufferers
  • People with ulcerative colitis
  • People with chronic bladder/bowel problems
