Applying for a test certificate for mopeds
Source: Serviceportal Rheinland-PfalzTo be allowed to ride a moped on the road, you need a test certificate. To do this, you must take a test at the relevant authority. If you pass the test, the authorities will issue you with a certificate. You must carry the test certificate with you when riding your moped.
You do not need a test certificate in the following cases:
- You already have a German driving license.
- You have a foreign driving license that is valid in Germany.
Before you are allowed to take the test for the certificate, you must take part in a corresponding training course. The following applies:
- The course takes place at an approved driving school.
- The driving instructor must have a class A driving instructor license.
- After the course, you will receive a certificate from the driving school stating that you have completed the training.
If you have not yet taken a test, you may only drive a moped on public roads when accompanied by a driving instructor.
If you are 15 years or older, you are allowed to ride a moped on public roads. To do this, you must have a so-called "moped test certificate". You will receive this if you have successfully completed theoretical and practical moped training and passed the required theoretical test.
Exception: You do not need a moped test certificate if you hold a valid German driver's license for any category or a valid foreign driver's license that entitles you to drive motor vehicles in Germany.
In addition, anyone who reached the age of 15 before April 1, 1980 does not need either a driving license or a moped test certificate to drive a moped.
