Study abroad

The procedure for studying abroad depends on the university in question. As a rule, you apply for a place at a foreign university by a certain deadline. Therefore, please contact your International Office in good time.

Contact your supervisor for international affairs at your faculty or institute or make an appointment with your International Office.

Alternatively, the German Academic Exchange Service can also answer general questions about studying abroad.

Most universities state that attending a counseling interview or an information event is a condition for applying for a foreign study place.

Upon acceptance/reservation of a potential stay abroad:

• Language certificate (please note that there are certain requirements regarding language level and issuance)
• Letter of Confirmation (during and after your stay)
• Certificate of Arrival (during your stay)
• Learning Agreement Part 1 (before stay)
• Learning Agreement Part 2 (during stay)
• Learning Agreement Part 3 (after stay)
• Visa, if applicable
• Grant Agreement if applicable (for Erasmus+)
• Application for a semester of leave at the home university, if applicable
• Transcript of Records (after your stay)
• Experience report (after stay)
• Completed EU questionnaire (after your stay)

The documents may vary depending on the requirements of your university and the corresponding program abroad. Additional documents may also be required. Please contact your International Office for more information.

Depending on the type of program (e.g. Erasmus, internship abroad, etc.), you may incur different costs.

Applications for a study place abroad are generally subject to deadlines. Please enquire about the exact deadlines during the relevant consultation at the International Office.

The processing time for a stay abroad can take between 3 and 6 months. In most cases, you will still need to submit documents during your stay abroad (updated Learning Agreement; Letter of Confirmation (Arrival), etc.).
