Applying for recognition as a health and paediatric nurse with a professional qualification from EU/EEA/Switzerland

Applicants from abroad submit the documents directly to the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for Social Affairs, Youth and Care. There, the documents are checked for completeness and, if necessary, additional documents are requested if they are not complete.

Equivalence with German education, which is proven by an examination by the recognition authority.

Up-to-date, complete tabular list of completed training and further education as well as gainful employment (professional curriculum vitae) in German.

- Proof of identity (identity card/passport) in simple copy

- Proof(s) of vocational training completed abroad (e.g. final certificate, diploma, examination certificate)

Where applicable, a certificate from the competent authority of the Member State stating that:

- the training complies with the minimum requirements set out in Article 31 in conjunction with point 5.2.1 of Annex V to Directive 2005/36/EC

Or

- that, during the five years preceding the issue of the certificate, the profession of nurse has been effectively and lawfully practised for at least three consecutive years.

Between 50.00 – 300.00 EUR depending on the workload according to the State Ordinance on the Fees of the Health Administration (special schedule of fees) of 28.03.2013.

In addition, 44.00 euros will be charged for the issuance of the professional certificate.

The applicant does not have to observe any deadlines. Proof of health suitability (medical certificate) and reliability (police clearance certificate) must not be older than three months at the time the professional title is issued.

The processing time is regulated accordingly in the requirements of the Professional Act and the corresponding training and examination regulations.

(EU: Three months after submission of complete dossier; third countries: four months after submission of the complete dossier)

(In the case of proceedings pursuant to § 81a under the Residence Act, the processing period is two months after submission of the complete documents (accelerated procedure)).

The applicant may lodge an objection against the assessment decision of the recognition authority with the competent authority within one month.

Documents are

- in the original /native language as an officially certified copy of the original, and

- in German translation as a simple copy .

To certify copies , please contact your city, municipal or district administration in Germany; abroad to the diplomatic missions of the Federal Republic of Germany or notaries (if necessary, the certification text may also be translated into German!).

Certification by translators, auditors, lawyers or copies of certified copies is not accepted.

Only translations that have been carried out in Germany or abroad by a publicly appointed or sworn interpreter or translator will be accepted.

If the applicant pays attention to the completeness of the documents, the recognition authority can process the procedure more quickly.

For the nursing professions of nurse and health and paediatric nurse, a new training course has been introduced in Germany from 01.01.2020.

Until 31.12.2023, the following transitional regulation applies in Rhineland-Palatinate:

In accordance with § 66a of the Act on Nursing Professions (PflBG), applications will continue to be processed in accordance with the Act on Professions in Nursing (Nursing Act-KrPflG) of 16.07.2003 in conjunction with the Training and Examination Ordinance for the Professions in Nursing (KrPflAPrV) of 10.11.2003 in the versions valid as of 31.12.2019.
