Only dentists who have successfully completed at least three years of further training after obtaining their license to practice dentistry or professional license and completing a year of general dentistry may call themselves a specialist dentist. Further training can only be completed at approved training facilities under the supervision of a specialist dentist authorized to provide further training.

Oral surgeons have specialized knowledge in implantations, surgical therapies on the upper and lower jaw, treatments of the oral mucosa and soft tissue in the jaw area as well as traumatological treatments (e.g. re-insertion of teeth after accidents, jaw fractures, wound care).

Orthodontists have specialized knowledge in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of malocclusions of the jaw and teeth.

Further training to become a specialist dentist takes 3 years (full-time), and a year of general dental training must also be completed prior to further training. Part-time training is possible. Up to three years of further training can be completed in a department of a university institution for dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine, in a department of a clinic or a comparable institution. Further training can also be completed in whole or in part in the practice of a registered specialist dentist, provided the registered specialist dentist is authorized to provide further training and the practice is recognized as a further training facility. A list of which clinics and practices are authorized to provide further training is available from the LZK. The start of further training must be registered with the LZK.
