Illnesses know no office hours: An acute stomach upset over the holidays or an unexpectedly high temperature at the weekend - there are many reasons why you may need to see a doctor when the surgeries are closed.

- As of April 16, 2012, you can reach the on-call medical service by calling the nationwide number 116 117. Doctors in private practice are on duty throughout Germany to treat patients in urgent medical cases on an outpatient basis - even at night, at weekends and on public holidays.

- The number works without an area code, is valid throughout Germany and is free of charge - regardless of whether you call from home or from your cell phone.

Prerequisites-

If you have

an illness that would normally require you to see a doctor in private practice, but treatment cannot wait until the next day for medical reasons, the medical on-call service is responsible. In some regions of Germany, this is also known as the medical emergency service.

- The on-call service should not be confused with the rescue service, which provides assistance in life-threatening cases. For emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes and serious accidents, call the emergency services on 112

- For acute dental problems, please contact the dental on-call service in your region

- The familiar regional numbers for the on-call service will continue to apply. However, with 116 117, there is no longer any need to search for the correct regional number.

- The 116 117 service will be launched on April 16, 2012. In the first few weeks, you will not be able to reach the medical on-call service everywhere in Germany using 116 117. Baden-Württemberg and Saarland as well as parts of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse will follow later. Patients there will initially continue to contact the on-call medical service as before, but the associations of statutory health insurance physicians are working on connecting the missing regions.

In which situation does the on-call service on 116 117 help?

For all non-life-threatening illnesses, 116 117 provides an on-call service outside normal surgery consultation hours if the patient requires urgent medical assistance. In the case of serious accidents and life-threatening emergencies (e.g. heart attack), 116 117 is the wrong number to call. In these cases, the emergency number 112 must be dialed.

What will change with the single number 116 117?
Patients now only need to remember one telephone number, which they can dial anywhere in Germany in urgent medical cases. This significantly improves the availability of the on-call service. There will be no changes to the medical on-call service itself. It will remain as usual.

At what times can the number be reached?

The medical on-call service is generally on duty outside the regular consultation hours of doctors in private practice - especially in the evening and after-hours, at weekends and on public holidays. It can also be reached via the standard on-call service number 116 117. Patients who call outside of these hours are informed of the on-call service times by a recorded message and asked to contact a doctor in private practice during the day in urgent cases. In Berlin and Bavaria, the medical on-call service is available around the clock, including 116 117.

Which doctors are on call?

Doctors in private practice from the respective region are involved in the on-call service. They provide the service in addition to their daily work in the practice and thus ensure that medical help is available - even when there are no consultation hours. Doctors from all specialist groups are involved in the medical on-call service. They regularly take part in further training courses that qualify them for the medical on-call service.
