If you move into a new home, you must register with the registration office responsible for you at your new place of residence within two weeks of moving in.

If you are under 16 years of age, you must be registered by the person whose home you are moving into.

If you are over 18 years of age and a carer or guardian has been appointed for you who can determine your residence, then your new home must be registered by your carer or guardian.

You only have to register newborn babies born in Germany if they move into a different home to that of their parents or mother.

To register your new home, you must come in person to the registration office responsible for you or authorize another person to do so.

NEW FROM DECEMBER 2024

Have you just moved and would like to register your residence as your main or only home? Do it here online, free of charge and without going to the authorities. You will receive a digital registration confirmation and update your ID card, passport or eID card.

Anyone who has moved into a new home must register as soon as possible. This also applies to re-registrations within a municipality. According to the Federal Registration Act, you must register within 14 days of moving. It is not necessary to deregister at the previous place of residence.

With electronic residence registration, you can register your new home digitally. You notify the authorities of your new place of residence via the online service and can also update your ID card or eID card.

To use the online service, you need to set up a user account using the online ID function. The easiest way to use the online ID function is via smartphone. To do this, install the ID card app. Also have your 6-digit personal PIN ready. If the new address is a rented apartment, a signed confirmation from the landlord is required.

Once the online application has been received, the Citizens' Registration Office will check the data and provide a digital registration confirmation for download. The address data on the chip of the ID card can then also be updated independently via the ID card app and the online service. Finally, Bundesdruckerei automatically sends an address sticker for the ID card and, if necessary, a residence sticker for the passport.

The Citizens' Services Department is divided into the Public Order Department and the Social Affairs and Pensions Department. The Citizens' Services Department is your point of contact for many areas of everyday life. On the one hand, there is the former Public Order Office, where you can register a business or, if you are planning an event, obtain a bar permit. Would you like to celebrate a street party with your neighbors and close the street for it? Perhaps you are annoyed by parking offenders or would like to know whether you, as a resident, are obliged to clean the street? Here too, you can get help from the Citizen Services Department.
