Elections
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzElections are organised by the administrations of the municipalities, cities and districts and are published in accordance with the regulations in force. With the polling card sent to you, you can personally cast your vote in the polling station assigned to you there on election day.
If you want to vote by post, you must apply for a polling card.
Information on the various elections
Several committees/bodies are elected in Germany. In the following, we would like to show you the various elections and provide you with more detailed information:
Local elections
Local elections take place every 5 years. Citizens and nationals of other member states of the European Union have the opportunity to vote for their local representative bodies. Eligible voters must have reached the age of 18 and have had a (main) residence in the respective electoral area for at least three months.
In the local elections, the following councils are elected depending on the place of residence:
- Local advisory council
- municipal council
- town council
- Association council
- district council
District administrator election
The district administrator is elected directly by the citizens of the district for a term of 8 years.
The district administrator is not only the head of the district administration and therefore the superior of all employees, but is also the chairperson of the district council in accordance with the district regulations. In this role, the district administrator is responsible for implementing the resolutions of the district council and its committees.
The last district administrator election took place in 2022.
State parliament election
The Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament is elected every five years in accordance with the electoral principles.
All Germans who have reached the age of 18 on the day of the election and have lived in Rhineland-Palatinate for at least three months are eligible to vote. Each voter has two votes in the state parliament election. With the constituency vote, you elect a member of parliament in your constituency. With the state vote, you vote for a state list or district list.
Bundestag election
The Bundestag is the people's representative body in Germany. As the authoritative legislative body, it is the most important body representing the people of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is made up of 598 members of parliament, who are elected every 4 years in accordance with the electoral principles.
European elections
Elections to the European Parliament take place every 5 years. MEPs are elected in a general, direct, free, secret and equal election.
