License plates: Reserve the license plate of your choice

At most registration authorities, you can reserve or apply for desired license plates in person, in writing or by telephone. Many regulatory authorities also offer an online service on the Internet.

Note: You can find out how long your desired license plate will remain reserved for you directly from the responsible office.

The licensing authority is in Rhineland-Palatinate,

• for an urban district: the city administration
• for a county: the county administration

You want a specific combination of letters or numbers for your license plate.

If you have reserved a desired license plate in advance, you will need the reservation confirmation for the admission procedure.

In addition to the fees for admission, you will incur fees according to the administrative burden for

• Desired license plate: EUR 10.20
• Reservations: EUR 2.60

Hint: If you opt for an "old license plate" for several distinctive signs in an administrative district, you will only have to pay a desired license plate fee if you also want a certain alpha-numeric combination to do so.

Attention: Whether the identification number you want can be assigned by the registration authority requires an additional electronic query. The fees are therefore also incurred if your desired license plate is not available.

The additional fee will also be charged if a license plate that has already been assigned at an earlier date is reserved or reassigned.

If, when you deregister your vehicle, you would like to use your license plate again later in the same administrative district, you can reserve it for a certain period of time at most registration authorities for a fee and also apply for it again in connection with the registration of another vehicle.
