School-leaving certificate subsequent acquisition

• The preparation for the examination is generally left to the applicant himself/herself. However, it is also possible to participate in a preparatory course at an adult education centre, distance learning institute or other privately recognised educational institution.
• The application for admission to the examination must be submitted in writing to the school authority by 15 January, 15 May or 15 September of each year.
• The subsequent examination is divided into a written and an oral part and, at the request of the candidate, into a sport-practical part.
• The examination is passed if at least "sufficient" or "poor" has been achieved as the final grade in each examination subject. Further grading regulations apply.
• Those who have passed the examination will then receive the certificate of professional maturity. Those who have not passed the examination will receive a written notification from the school authority, which also contains the reasons for failing.

Anyone who:

• has reached the age of 16,
• has not obtained the vocational qualification or an equivalent qualification,
• has had his/her first residence in Rhineland-Palatinate for at least six months or has attended a recognised preparatory course in Rhineland-Palatinate,
• has unsuccessfully passed an examination for non-pupils in Rhineland-Palatinate or in another Land of the Federal Republic of Germany more than once
• has participated in at least two-thirds of the preparatory teaching time as an applicant from a recognised preparatory course.

The application for admission to the examination shall be accompanied by:

• a curriculum vitae in tabular form with a detailed description of the previous educational path and previous professional activities,
• a certified copy of the leaving certificate of the last school attended,
• a registration certificate
• a personally signed photograph that is not older than one year,
• an explanation as to whether, when and where an attempt has already been made to take an examination for non-pupils in order to obtain the qualification of vocational maturity
• a declaration of the choice of the third subject of the written examination, the other subjects of the oral examination and whether the applicant wishes to take the sport-practical examination,
• a report on learning areas and topics with which the applicant has been particularly concerned
• in the case of applicants from recognised preparatory courses, a certificate from the continuing education institution stating the duration and scope of participation in the recognised preparatory course as well as the performance grades achieved at the end of the preparatory course in the individual examination subjects (preliminary grades).
