Leaving the church declaration
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzIf you wish to leave a religious community, you must register this with the responsible office.
Anyone who has reached the age of 14 and is not legally incapacitated can declare their withdrawal from the church. The declaration of withdrawal from the church may only be made in person and not by an authorized representative. For minors under the age of 14, the parents with custody can declare their withdrawal. If a child has reached the age of 12, withdrawal cannot be declared against their will. For legally incompetent minors who have reached the age of 14, the legal representatives who have custody of the child can declare their withdrawal.
The resignation must be declared to the registrar in whose district the person leaving the religious community resides. The resignation becomes effective on the day following the submission of the declaration. The end of the obligation to pay church tax is regulated by the Church Tax Act (effective at the end of the calendar month). The fee is charged separately for each declaration, even if several declarations of resignation are submitted at the same time.
