The birth of a child must be reported to the registry office responsible for the place of birth.

If your child is born in a hospital or other facility where obstetric care is provided, this facility will be responsible for registering the birth. In this case, you should enquire at the maternity facility in good time about which documents you need to bring with you to the delivery date. .

If the birth does not take place in a hospital or other facility where obstetric care is provided (home birth), the birth must be registered in person by a parent with custody at the registry office within one week. If the parents are unable to register the birth, the birth must be registered by another person who was present at the birth.

Special information for Association Bad Marienberg (Westerwald)

Every child born in the area of the Bad Marienberg municipality must be entered in the register of births at the Bad Marienberg registry office within one week. The place of birth is therefore decisive, not the registration address of the mother or parents.

You will need the following documents:

for parents who are married to each other
- Birth certificates of the parents
- Marriage certificate or a certified printout from the marriage register
for parents who are not married to each other
- Birth certificate of the mother
- if paternity has already been recognized:
  - Declaration of acknowledgment of paternity and the mother's declaration of consent
  - Birth certificate of the father
  - if applicable, the declaration of custody
identity card, passport or a recognized passport replacement document of the parents
a certificate of birth issued by a doctor, midwife or maternity nurse, if they were present at the birth

A marriage certificate must also be submitted if the marriage is now divorced or the husband is deceased.

Special information for Association Bad Marienberg (Westerwald)

The following documents must be submitted in the original:

if the child's parents are married to each other:
their birth certificates and the marriage certificate or a certified printout from the marriage register
if the child's parents are not married to each other:
the mother's birth certificate and, if paternity has already been recognized, the declarations to this effect, the father's birth certificate and, if applicable, the declarations of custody
if at least one parent is divorced:
additionallythe marriage certificate and the final divorce decree
if at least one parent is widowed:
additionally the marriage certificate and the death certificate
always the parents' identity card, passport or other passport replacement document
the birth certificate issued by a doctor, midwife or maternity nurse

In individual cases, further documents must be submitted.

If at least one parent does not have German citizenship, please ask the registry office which additional documents must be submitted. Further information, also with regard to paternity acknowledgements and name assignments, can be obtained from the registry office.
