Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzIf you gave birth to your child at home, every parent with custody of the child is obliged to report the birth.
If you as the parent with custody are unable to report the birth, any other person who was present at the birth or has knowledge of the birth is obliged to report it.
The birth must be registered verbally or in writing with the necessary documents at the registry office of the place of birth.

- Certificate from the midwife / maternity nurse or doctor confirming the birth,
- identity card or passport of the parents.
If the parents are married to each other:
- Birth certificates of the parents,
- Marriage certificate or certified printout from the marriage register.
If the parents are not married to each other:
- Birth certificate of the mother
If paternity has already been recognized additionally:
- Declaration of acknowledgment of paternity with the mother's consent,
- Birth certificate of the father,
- Declaration of custody, if available.
For a home birth, the following is required in any case
- Certificate from the midwife / maternity assistant or doctor confirming the birth
The following documents are also required for the birth certificate. These depend on the marital status of the mother or parents:
Parents are married to each other
- Birth certificates of mother and father
and - Marriage certificate
and - Signed name declaration (notification of birth)
and - Identity card / passport
Mother is single; not yet married
- Mother's birth certificate
and - signed name declaration (birth announcement)
and - Identity card/passport
Should the father be entered in the register?
- Acknowledgment of paternity with the mother's consent (can be declared before birth). The local registry office or youth welfare office is responsible.
and - Birth certificate of the father
and - Identity card/passport of the father
- Copy of the joint declaration of custody, if applicable
and
- in the case of joint custody, signed name declaration (birth notification) of the father
Mother is divorced

additionally - Current marriage certificate with divorce note from the previous marriage
Additionally for ethnic German repatriates
- Registration certificate, expellee identity card
- Certificate of name change according to § 94 BVFG
Additionally for naturalized citizens
- Certificate of naturalization
- Certificate of change of name according to Art. 47 EGBGB
Information for foreign parents
- The nationality and identity of the parents must be proven by presenting a valid passport.
- Proof of residence status must also be provided, as the registry office must check whether the child may acquire German citizenship.
- Not all foreign civil status certificates can be used in Germany without further ado. It may therefore be necessary for the relevant documents to be over-certified (apostille or legalization) by the competent authorities. It may also be necessary to have them checked by the German diplomatic mission abroad.

Foreign civil status documents must also be translated by a sworn interpreter in Germany (www.justiz-dolmetscher.de).
- Notification of birth: free of charge,
- Birth certificate for the social benefit "Assistance with pregnancy and maternity": free of charge,
- additional certificates: 13.00 euros each (each additional certificate of the same type 6.50 euros if applied for at the same time)
Birth certification is generally free of charge.
A fee of 12.00 euros is charged for the issue of birth certificates for private use (e.g. for the family register). Each additional certificate issued at the same time costs 6.00 euros. The corresponding fees can also be paid at the hospital administration. For each birth, three special-purpose certificates are issued for
- Maternity benefit (health insurance)
- child benefit
- parental allowance
- Notification of birth: within one week.
- If a child is stillborn, the notification must be made no later than the third working day following the birth.
- Subsequent notification of the first name: within one month.
The birth of the child must be reported to the registry office in whose jurisdiction it was born within one week. Each custodial parent is obliged to report the birth. Otherwise, the birth can be reported by any other person if they were present at the birth (midwife, father).
Procedure
The birth must be registered in person with the necessary documents at the registry office in the place of birth.
