SEPA - Single Euro Payments Area

Credit transfers and direct debits in euros will be standardised throughout Europe. The term SEPA stands for Single Euro Payments Area. This SEPA area consists of all countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area as well as Switzerland. The aim of SEPA is to create common standards for payment transactions. According to these standards, all domestic and cross-border credit transfers, direct debits and card payments are to be processed in euros in the future. This will make payments within the Community faster and more convenient.

In euro payment transactions, IBAN and BIC replace the account number and bank sort code. You will find your IBAN and BIC on your bank statement, in online banking and in the future on your Bank Card.

IBAN = International Bank Account Number (internationale Kontonummer)
BIC = Business Identifier Code (international bank sort code)

The international account number IBAN: In addition to your known bank sort code and account number, you only need to remember two new things for the IBAN: the country code DE for Germany and an individual check digit.

IBAN = DE + check digit + bank sort code + account number

The BIC identifies the bank and is used like the domestic bank sort code.
