Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzThere are clean air plans for areas with poor air quality. Clean air plans contain measures to improve air quality. Low emission zones are one possible measure in such clean air plans. Low emission zones reduce particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide pollution. Vehicles with high pollutant emissions are not allowed to drive in low emission zones.
If you want to drive your vehicle in such an environmental zone, you must purchase a fine dust sticker/environmental sticker. The sticker is available in three different colors, each of which is assigned to a pollutant group. The classification of your vehicle into one of the pollutant groups is based on the emission code numbers. These can be found in the vehicle documents.
Note: A separate traffic sign indicates the environmental zones. The additional sign shows the colors of the stickers that allow vehicles to drive freely in the specific environmental zone.

Which pollutant group does my vehicle belong to?
- The emission code of the vehicle is decisive for the allocation of motor vehicles to a specific pollutant group. This can be determined with the help of the vehicle documents.
- In the case of vehicle documents issued before October 1, 2005, the emission code can be found in the vehicle registration document in the field "Key number to 1" in the fifth and sixth position of the code.
- For vehicle documents issued after October 1, 2005, the emission code can be found in field 14.1. of the registration certificate. These are the last two numbers in the series of digits.

Where can I get a fine dust sticker?
- Fine dust stickers can be purchased at various locations. The respective issuing office enters the license plate number on the sticker. The sticker is then affixed to the inside of the windshield on the passenger side of the vehicle. The stickers are valid nationwide and are available from the registration authorities as well as from garages and test centers.
