Educational support (BAföG) Permit for interns

You can receive educational support if you complete an internship with a minimum duration of 3 months in connection with your school education or studies. Internships abroad in connection with the attendance of secondary general education schools are not eligible.

For you as an intern, the monthly requirement is the amounts that are also paid for the visit to the training center with which the internship is related.

In the case of an internship abroad, a lump-sum reimbursement of travel expenses is also provided. If you prove that you have taken out health insurance abroad, you will receive a subsidy for the costs. In the case of an internship in non-European countries, surcharges or reductions on demand may be made to compensate for differences in purchasing power.

If you want to apply for BAföG for a domestic internship in connection with a school education, you must submit your application to the Office for Educational Support responsible for the promotion of school education. As a rule, it is the Office for Educational Support in whose district your parents have the permanent residence. The offices for educational support are set up at the district administrations and the administrations of the district-free cities.

If you want to apply for BAföG for a domestic internship in connection with a course of study, you must submit your application to the Office for Educational Support of the respective university.

If you want to apply for BAföG for an internship abroad, the responsibility for both pupils and students lies with the central international offices for educational support (which vary depending on the destination country).

Your own income and assets as well as the income of your parents and, if applicable, your spouse or registered partner are not sufficient to finance your education.

For internships at secondary general schools and vocational schools, technical and technical secondary school classes, the attendance of which does not require a completed vocational training:

Tax assessment from the penultimate calendar year

if there is no tax assessment:

Printout of the electronic income tax certificate from the penultimate calendar year
If applicable, certificate from the responsible tax office for the tax-free annual income from the penultimate calendar year

The competent authority will inform you if further documents are required.

Rhineland-Palatinate offers you the opportunity to complete your application online. All you have to do is print out the forms, sign them and then send them to the responsible authority. After completing the application forms, you will automatically receive an overview with proofs, which you must submit additionally. If further documents are missing, they will be requested by the responsible authority from you.
