Source: Serviceportal Rheinland-PfalzThe registration will be cancelled at your request or in certain cases automatically. Your membership in a university and thus your status as a student expires upon exmatriculation.
Exmatriculation on request, e.g.:
- Change of place of study (you need the confirmation of exmatriculation from the previous university for enrolment at the new university)
- Termination of studies at your own request
Exmatriculation ex officio, for example:
- successful completion of studies (the final examination was passed)
- in case of improper re-registration for the following semester
- Exmatriculation due to final failure of preliminary, intermediate or final examinations
If you wish to terminate your membership at a university at your own request:
- apply for exmatriculation in writing and, if necessary, justify this decision.
- You will then receive a written confirmation of your exmatriculation stating the reason and the date on which the exmatriculation takes effect.

Which documents are required for exmatriculation varies from university to university.
There are no costs for the de-registration itself.
In the event of a late application for exmatriculation, fees for the following semester may be due.
Exmatriculation usually takes effect at the end of a semester. The deadlines that have to be observed vary from university to university.
If there are special reasons, an exmatriculation can also take place immediately.
The processing time can be found in the explanations on the homepage of the respective university.
In the event of ex officio exmatriculation, an objection can be lodged against the notice of exmatriculation. The procedure results from the enclosed information on the right of appeal.
The application can be made either via your personal online access or via the Registrar's Office of the university at which you are enrolled.
After exmatriculation, there are a few things to consider, as the study status expires.
You should inform the health insurance company about the exmatriculation. You should ask whether the exmatriculation changes anything in your insurance cover.
BAföG recipients must remember to inform the BAföG office of the responsible Studentenwerk and submit a copy of the certificate of exmatriculation.
