Apply for an extension of the driving license for categories AM, A1, A2 or A

Please contact your local driver's license authority at the city or district administration or your local citizens' office at the municipal administration, the independent municipality or the association municipality administration.

• You must have a driver's license.
• You must have your main residence in the Federal Republic of Germany.
• The minimum age for category AM is 15 years.
• The minimum age for category A1 is 16 years.
• The minimum age for category A2 is 18 years.
• The minimum age for category A is 24 years for motorcycles with direct access and 21 years for three-wheeled motor vehicles with a power output of more than 15 kW.

• Valid identity card or passport (with current registration certificate if applicable)
• Application for extension of driving license
• biometric photo in accordance with the passport regulations (size 45x35 mm)
• Eye test certificate (not older than two years)
• Proof of first aid training (if not already shown to the driving license authority)
• Valid driver's license
• If applicable, a copy of the file card from the last issuing authority (if different from the authority)
• Details of driving school

The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt).

If the driver's license is sent directly to your home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.

The practical test must be taken within 12 months of passing the theoretical test. Otherwise the theoretical examination loses its validity.
