Visa: apply - for au pair employees
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzIn order to enter the country, au pairs must in principle have a national visa that allows them to take up appropriate employment. The German diplomatic mission (embassy, consulate) in the country of origin is responsible for issuing this visa.
Depending on the nationality, there may be an entry facilitation for au pairs:
- Au pairs who are EU citizens do not need a visa to enter the Federal Republic of Germany. Within the framework of their right of free movement, they can enter the country without a visa and pursue an economic activity in Germany, regardless of the purpose and duration of their stay. The same applies to nationals of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
During a transitional period, nationals of the new EU Member State Croatia first need an EU work permit until 30 June 2015 to work as au pairs, which must be applied for at the responsible employment agency.
- Au pairs who are Swiss nationals also do not need a visa for entry due to the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons between the EU Member States and Switzerland.
- Au pairs who are nationals of Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand and the United States of America can also enter without a visa, regardless of the purpose and duration of their stay. You must apply for the required residence permit within three months after entering the Federal territory at the immigration authority responsible for the place of residence. However, you should contact the German mission abroad because of the question of whether entry with a visa for au pair employment is recommended despite the generally existing visa-free regime.
