Register marriage

Source: BUS Rheinland-Pfalz

You must register your intended marriage in person at the registry office in whose jurisdiction you have your place of residence or habitual abode.

To speed up the procedure, you can send the registry office your preferred date for the marriage as well as the data required to check your eligibility for marriage by pre-registering.

The place where you register the marriage does not have to be the place where your marriage is to take place. In principle, you can get married at any registry office in Germany.

A civil marriage and a church wedding are independent of each other.

No witnesses need to be present at the marriage ceremony. However, if you wish, you can appoint 1 or 2 people as witnesses.

You can decide at the wedding or at a later date whether you wish to have a joint or separate surname.

Special information for Association Pirmasens-Land

The registration of the marriage (formerly called Aufgebot) should be made in good time before the planned marriage. We recommend contacting the registry office at least 3 months before the desired date.

The registry office in whose district one of the spouses is registered with their main or secondary residence is responsible for registering the marriage. If you have more than one residence, you can choose. There you will receive detailed information about the documents you need to submit to register the marriage.

Various documents are required to check your (legal) eligibility to marry. As part of the registration procedure, it will be checked whether the legal requirements for marriage are met or whether there is a prohibition on marriage.

Please do not rely on the statements of relatives, friends, acquaintances, etc. The necessary documents are different for every bridal couple. Only the responsible registry office can provide you with binding information.

You can obtain the necessary information from the Pirmasens-Land registry office in Pirmasens as follows:

Both parties to the marriage are German nationals:

Personal appearance of at least one of the spouses at the Pirmasens-Land registry office in Pirmasens or

Telephone inquiry under telephone no.: 06331-872103

One or both parties to the marriage are foreign nationals:

It is essential that the spouses appear in person. As a rule, a comprehensive consultation is required. Please bring any existing papers and documents with you, as well as the passport of the foreign spouses.

In all cases, you will receive a written list of the documents required for your marriage after appropriate consultation and information.

Marriages at the Pirmasens-Land registry office generally take place in the wedding room of our administration building, Bahnhofstraße 19 in Pirmasens. It is also possible to get married at our branch office in the "Alte Kirche" cultural center in Vinningen. However, only a limited number of appointments are available here.

In addition to the bride and groom and any witnesses, there is room for around 25 guests in our wedding room. Are you expecting more guests? Just get in touch with us!

Access to the wedding room is barrier-free and is therefore also easily accessible for people with restricted mobility.

Weddings usually take place on Friday mornings (last date 12.00 noon). On request, weddings are also possible from Monday to Thursday during general office hours.

The marriage ceremony lasts about 30 minutes. Afterwards, we offer you our newly renovated room on the ground floor for a small drink with your guests. This room is also barrier-free. Weather permitting, there is also a suitable area outside our administration building available to those getting married. This area is located in the parking lot at the rear of the building with a view over the city of Pirmasens. However, you will need to bring your own drinks and crockery.

Please remember to plan your wedding without any time pressure. Many matters relating to the most beautiful day of your life must be planned well in advance (e.g. church wedding, venue for the celebrations).

You can register your marriage at the registry office in your place of residence at the earliest six months before the desired wedding date. You can find more information about registering your marriage below.

It is also possible to get married at the Pirmasens-Land registry office if the couple do not live in the municipality of Pirmasens-Land.
