Register for admission to an elementary school
Source: Serviceportal Rheinland-PfalzElementary school is the first common level of the education system. It introduces your child to learning at school. Pupils learn to work and act independently and together. Your child will be taught to adopt important values, attitudes and behaviors. The elementary school supports pupils in their individual development and offers guidance.
The elementary school bases its educational work on the respective developmental stage of the pupils. Your child should learn to fulfill the demands placed on them increasingly independently, to set their own tasks, to perform their own work and to take responsibility within the scope of their own abilities. They should be supported in expressing their opinions freely but respectfully and contributing to peaceful coexistence.
When your child is of school age, you must register them at the elementary school responsible for you.
The elementary school provides for reliable lesson times with lessons spread as evenly as possible over the school mornings. The daily school time should be at least four hours in the morning up to and including grade 2, then five hours. The daily school time is divided into lessons, relaxation periods and play and exercise times.
Pupils in grades 1 to 4 are taught in elementary school. At the end of the grades, they generally advance to the next grade without being promoted. No numerical grades are given in grades 1 and 2; parents receive information on their child's development in the form of verbal reports at the end of the school year and a recorded parent-teacher-child discussion in the middle of the second school year. At the end of the semester of grades three and four, the children receive pure grade reports, which are explained in a recorded parent-teacher-child discussion. At the end of the school year in grades three and four, pupils receive a report combining numerical grades and verbal explanations. By decision of the general conference and in consultation with the school parents' council, the assessment in grade 3 can continue to be exclusively verbal for the first semester or for the entire school year.
The following learning areas and subjects are taught: religion/ethics, German, mathematics, science, music, sport, visual arts/textile design/crafts and integrated foreign language work in English or French. No marks are awarded for foreign language lessons; instead, a portfolio is kept.

In the first two years, they do not receive numerical grades. Instead, you will receive a written report at the end of the school year, which describes your child's development through a coherent text or through standardized, grade-level ability profiles. At the end of the second year, there will also be a binding meeting between you, the teachers and your child to discuss your child's learning progress. In additionöcan You can, of course, arrange a meeting with your child's teacher at any time.
At the end of the semester in grades three and four, your child will receive a pure grade report, which will be explained to you in a meeting. At the end of the school year in grades three and four, there is a report that combines numerical grades and ability profiles to be marked with a cross. By decision of the whole school conference and in agreement with the school parents' council, the report in year three for the first semester or for the whole school year can continue to be issued exclusively in text form.
