Recognition of teacher training examination
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzWould you like to work as a teacher in Rhineland-Palatinate without a teaching degree? Since in certain subjects the recruitment needs for teachers cannot be fully covered by teachers who have appropriate training for the respective teaching profession, there is great interest in qualified university graduates in required subjects in Rhineland-Palatinate, even without teacher training.
The required subjects are published on the website of the Ministry of Education.

The individual examination of the scientific/artistic requirements and the decision on admission to lateral or lateral entry is generally carried out by the State Examination Office. Applications are submitted via the Supervisory and Services Directorate.

The Ministry of Education is responsible for checking the subject-specific requirements.
Lateral entry:
Applicants who have a university degree in a school subject (e.g. diploma from a university or comparable higher education institution, master's degree, master's degree in the main subject, 4-semester master's degree at a university of applied sciences) can be employed in the preparatory service, provided that the existing training places cannot be completely filled with applicants who have passed a first state examination for the corresponding teaching profession.
In addition, applicants must generally be able to prove academic achievements amounting to 60 ECTS or 40 SWS in a so-called second subject. This subject does not have to be a required subject, but a subject of the respective type of school.
Page entry:
There are two different ways to prove the professional suitability for the page entry:
University degree in a school subject (diploma, master's degree in the main subject, master's degree from a university or a comparable university degree)
usually additionally in a second teaching subject:
- intermediate diploma or
- intermediate examination or
- Bachelor or
- comparable achievements (proof of approx. 40 semester hours per week or 60 credit points)
For the subjects of fine arts and music, no second subject is required for teaching at Realschulen plus and Gymnasien.
First state examination for a teaching profession, one of the two subjects must be a required subject
additionally for a teaching profession at general education schools
- a subsequent professional activity of at least two years in the pedagogical or technical field or
- a child-rearing period of at least two years
Lateral entry can only take place in a type of school for which the First State Examination entitles
There are no fees.
There are application deadlines for hiring lateral and lateral entry.
