If your child is born in a hospital or other facility where obstetric care is provided, this facility will be responsible for registering the birth. In this case, you should enquire at the maternity facility in good time about which documents you need to bring with you to the delivery date. .
If the birth does not take place in a hospital or other facility where obstetric care is provided (home birth), the birth must be registered in person by a parent with custody at the registry office within one week. If the parents are unable to register the birth, the birth must be registered by another person who was present at the birth.

- identity card, passport or a recognized passport replacement document of the parents
- a certificate of birth issued by a doctor, midwife or maternity nurse, if they were present at the birth
There is no charge for registering a birth at the registry office.
Administrative fees are charged for issuing a birth certificate, which vary depending on the federal state.
Notification of a birth at the registry office is free of charge.
- Issuing a birth certificate: € 13.00
- Issuing a birth certificate for the family register: € 13.00
- Issue of a multilingual birth certificate: € 13.00
- Issue of a certified copy from the birth register: €13.00
For all other copies requested at the same time and produced in the same process: € 6.50.
Issuing a birth certificate for maternity/parental benefit, pension insurance, accident insurance, long-term care insurance and health insurance in Germany is free of charge.
The birth of your child must be reported to the registry office responsible for the place of birth within one week.
The day of birth is not included when calculating the notification period.
If your child is stillborn, the notification must be made no later than the third working day after the birth.
Birth certificates can be issued after the birth has been recorded in the register of births.
