Naturalization test Information provision

If you apply for German citizenship, you must prove that you have knowledge of the legal and social order and living conditions in Germany.

As a rule, this is done by successfully passing a naturalization test.

You can also prove your civic knowledge by successfully completing an integration course. The prerequisite for this is that you have passed the "Living in Germany" test and received an official certificate confirming your civic knowledge.

If you have graduated from a German secondary school or have obtained a comparable or higher qualification from a German general school, you do not have to take a naturalization test. The same applies if you have completed a degree in a subject that imparts civic knowledge (e.g. law, political science).

The national naturalization test is carried out using questionnaires in which you have to choose the correct answer from four possible answers.

There are 30 questions from the subject areas

• "Life in a democracy",
• "History and responsibility"
• "People and society".

Three further test questions are asked specifically about the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate if you are registered here as your primary residence.
