Source: Serviceportal Rheinland-PfalzAccording to the Driving Licence Ordinance (FEV), road users who are unable to move safely in traffic due to physical or mental impairments may only participate in traffic if precautions are taken to ensure that they do not endanger others.
This means that if the road user discovers that his or her eyesight is no longer sufficient to safely participate in road traffic, he or she must register any visual aid that may be required.
Bus and truck driver's license holders must also pass an ophthalmological examination of vision every 5 years for renewal.
Contact the driver's license office of your district or city (main residence). The competent authority is the district administration, in large cities belonging to a district or independent of a district, the city administration.
You must be the holder of a valid driver's license.
- Identity card or passport with simple registration certificate
- Driving licence
- New photograph that complies with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance
- Certificate of a valid eye test
- The eye test certificate, certificate or expert opinion must not be older than two years.
The fees are set by the driving licence authority in accordance with the Schedule of Fees for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt).

If facts become known which give rise to doubts that the applicant for a driving licence does not meet the vision requirements set out in Appendix 6 or that there are other visual impairments which impair fitness to drive motor vehicles, the driving licence authority may require the provision of an ophthalmological report in preparation for the decision to issue or renew the driving licence or to impose restrictions or conditions arrange.
