Apply for a negative certificate (for citizenship)

Source: BUS Rheinland-Pfalz

If you require official proof that you do not have German citizenship, you can apply to the citizenship authority for a declaration of non-existence of German citizenship. If it can be established that you do not have German citizenship, a so-called negative certificate will be issued.

You will need a negative certificate, for example, if you have been asked by an authority abroad (e.g. in your country of origin or in your parents' country of origin) to provide official proof that you do not have German citizenship or if this is required in order to use the consular services of another country's diplomatic mission in Germany.

A negative certificate is often required, for example, if you were born in Germany, are descended from German ancestors or have lived in Germany for a very long time.

Special information for District-free City Worms

Since January 1, 2000, German citizenship is always lost if a German citizen of full age voluntarily acquires a foreign citizenship upon application (§ 25 para. 1 StAG).

It is irrelevant whether he or she resides permanently in Germany or abroad. Loss of German citizenship can only be avoided if permission to retain German citizenship was granted by the citizenship authority before the foreign citizenship was acquired. However, an application alone is not sufficient for this. The retention permit must have been issued before the foreign nationality was acquired.

In most cases, the acquisition of citizenship of a member state of the European Union or Switzerland does not result in the loss of German citizenship if the acquisition takes place after August 27, 2007. As a rule, a retention permit is not required.

If German citizenship is lost due to the acquisition of a foreign citizenship, the person is treated as a foreigner in accordance with the newly acquired foreign citizenship. For example, an application for a residence or settlement permit must be submitted. Further information on residence permits can be obtained from the relevant immigration office.

If you wish to acquire another nationality in addition to German, please always contact the relevant citizenship authority (at your main place of residence) beforehand.
