Issuing a death certificate
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzThe doctor checks the identity of the deceased, examines the body and determines the death, the time and the nature and cause of death. If the doctor determines beyond doubt a natural cause of death, this will be noted on the death certificate and the deceased may be picked up by an undertaker. If there are signs of non-natural death (e.g. accident, suspicion of third-party influence), the police must be involved so that an autopsy can be ordered by the public prosecutor's office if necessary.
The costs of issuing the death certificate must be paid by the person liable to bear the costs (usually relatives); they are based on the scale of fees for doctors (GOÄ).
