Applying for export license plates for vehicles

Source: BUS Rheinland-Pfalz

If you want to transfer a vehicle abroad, you sometimes need an export license plate. This applies in the following cases:

  • Your vehicle is
    • subject to registration, but has been taken out of service
    • is exempt from registration and requires a license plate, but still without a license plate

This applies regardless of whether you drive your vehicle

  • under its own power or
  • as a trailer abroad.

With the export license plate, you will receive vehicle documents and, on request, an international registration certificate. The export license plate is limited to a maximum of one year and the vehicle requires a valid general inspection during this period. Both are valid for a limited period for the transfer of the vehicle.

You can obtain the export license plate from your local vehicle registration authority.

Online registration with export is not possible.

In principle, applications must be submitted to the registration authority responsible for the vehicle owner's place of residence.

If there is no place of residence, branch or office in Germany, the authority of the place of residence or the place of stay of an authorized recipient is responsible.

The authorized recipient and the vehicle owner must submit and sign the declaration of authorization to receive when an export or short-term license plate is issued.

Special features:

Registration by a third party: informal, written authorization from the person for whom the vehicle is to be registered

Minors: The signature of both legal guardians is required here. These must either be submitted directly to the registration office or officially notarized.

Companies: To register a company car, you will need a current excerpt from the trade or commercial register, the identity documents of the managing director(s) and their power of attorney.

If you are resident outside Germany: If the authorized recipient is not resident in the city of Worms, the authorized recipient must be present in person when the export license plate is issued. The place of residence of the authorized recipient must be proven by presenting an identity card or passport with police registration confirmation.

If the applicant does not have a current account within the European Union, the vehicle tax must be paid in advance to a customs administration payment office once the export license plate has been issued by the registration authority. Alternatively, the SEPA direct debit mandate for the collection of vehicle tax can also be submitted by an authorized recipient.

Note:

The vehicle must always be presented to the relevant registration authority. Exceptions can be made on presentation of a new general inspection, not older than 4 weeks.
