Submit a lost and found report
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzIf you have found a valuable item (i.e. with a value of more than 10.00 euros), you must hand it in. A lost property report will be recorded. Among other things, the lost property, the place and time it was found and your personal details will be recorded.
Storage and auction:
The lost and found office is obliged to keep lost property for at least six months. If the owner does not get in touch within this period, you as the finder are entitled to the item found. If you do not exercise this right or if the lost property is found in public buildings or on public transport, the city or municipality itself becomes the owner of the items.
These lost property items are then auctioned off publicly at longer intervals after prior announcement by the lost and found office. The proceeds from the auction go to the municipality's budget.
Lost property in the Mainz city area
You can make inquiries about lost items in person, by telephone, by fax or by e-mail. To make your claim credible, you must describe the lost item in detail.
Handing over to the owner
This is done in person or by proxy by appointment during the opening hours of the lost and found office.
Handing in lost property
You do not need to make an appointment to hand in lost property.
Important information when handing in lost property is the date and location of the find. You can also enter your own details for a possible thank-you note or finder's fee. This data would then also be given to the owner when the item is collected, unless you refuse to do so. Please also use the attached form.
