Applying for a new driver's license due to theft, illegibility or loss
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzIf your driving license has been lost or destroyed, for example due to theft, illegibility or loss, you will need a new driving license unless you waive your right to drive. If you do not report the loss of your driving license immediately and apply for a replacement document, you are committing an administrative offence.
If your name has changed, you do not have to have a new driving license issued. However, it may be useful to be in possession of an EU driving license with up-to-date information, especially when driving abroad. If you wish to change the name on your driving license, you will be issued with a new card driving license upon request.
Contact the driving license office of your district or independent city (main residence). The responsible authority is the district administration, in large district or independent cities the city administration.
The responsible authority in Rhineland-Palatinate is the district administration, in large cities belonging to a district or independent of a district the city administration.

The tasks of the Traffic Monitoring Office, which was founded in 1987, cover the major topic of "motor vehicles" in all organizational areas.
This involves not only the often controversial operations, e.g. against parking offences, but also, since the incorporation of the traffic department, formerly part of the public order office, in 2004, all matters relating to vehicle operation (from registration and re-registration to immobilization) as well as, for example, driver's licenses, cab licences, bus permits, driving school and driving instructor permits.
The three departments of Office 31 are divided into
- Traffic monitoring/field service department,
- Department for fines/towing matters,
- Traffic department with driving license authority and vehicle registration authority
