Vehicle registration: Re-registration in another registration district with application for a new license plate

• The owner:in of the vehicle has their main residence in Mainz.
• The registered office or branch office is in Mainz.
• A valid general inspection for the vehicle is available.
• There must be no motor vehicle tax arrears.
• All overdue fees incurred in connection with a registration must have been paid.

• SEPA direct debit mandate for vehicle tax (form available in the "Forms" section or at the local registration office)

If represented by an authorized person, additionally

• ID document of the authorized person (and the person granting power of attorney)
• Signed declaration of power of attorney

In the case of registration for minors, additionally

• written consent of both legal guardians
• identity documents of the legal guardians
• Custody judgment, if applicable

For companies entered in the commercial register

• Extract from the commercial register (at the local court) and business registration (each not older than 3 years)
• Power of attorney of the managing director or authorized signatory with ID (copy) in the case of registration by a third party
• ID of the authorized person
• For the cab or car rental industry: original or copy of the license certificate

For liberal professions (e.g. lawyers, doctors)

• If possible, current proof of freelance status or self-employment

For professions with business registration (e.g. e.K.)

• Business registration (not older than 3 years; if necessary, have the trade office confirm that it is up to date)
• For cab or car rental businesses: original or copy of the license certificate

For registered associations (e.V.)

• Extract from the register of associations
• Power of attorney of the person representing with ID (copies) in the case of registration by third parties
• ID of the authorized person

For companies under civil law (GbR)

• Overview of all shareholders (shareholder agreement)
• Power of attorney and declaration as to which natural person is to be authorized (signed by all partners)
• Identification of all shareholders
• For cab or rental car business: original or copy of license certificate

Special vehicle use

• If the business suggests a special vehicle use (cab, rental car, self-drive rental vehicle, public bus, passenger transport), the completed and signed "Vehicle use" form (form in the "Forms" section at the bottom of this page or available from the local licensing authority)

• Transfer of a vehicle with a foreign, German license plate to Mainz with change of owner:inside
  Standard fee: 30,30 Euro
• Transfer of a vehicle with a foreign, German license plate to Mainz without change of owner
  Standard fee: 28.30 euros
• Additional fees may apply depending on the individual case.
• The fees do not include the costs for license plates.

Vehicle registration only with direct debit authorization for vehicle tax

Anyone registering or re-registering a new vehicle must issue a direct debit authorization for vehicle tax for the main customs office in Ulm. The direct debit authorization for vehicle tax is only valid for the registered vehicle and expires when it is deregistered.

Due to the changeover to the SEPA direct debit procedure, you must generally submit a SEPA direct debit mandate for the collection of vehicle tax each time you register a vehicle. The SEPA direct debit mandate valid for the Mainz registration authority can be found in the "Forms" section and in paper form on site.

Applications and information on tax relief for a vehicle can be found on the customs website. You can submit applications for tax relief due to severe disability to the registration authority as part of the registration process. To do so, you must present the original of your severely disabled person's pass.
