School trips: reimbursement of costs

Source: BUS Rheinland-Pfalz

A school trip is teaching at a different location, i.e. it is a school event that allows a direct view and discussion of topics relevant to teaching. They are prepared and follow-up. In addition, it is intended to promote social coexistence in a class. If pupils do not take part in a school trip, they attend lessons in another class or course or another school event during this time.

In the case of school trips such as class and course trips or school hiking days, the costs for the pupils must always be borne by them themselves or by their parents. If the cost contributions cannot be raised, there are various support options:

  • In some cases, a support association of the school or another sponsor may cover the costs.
  • If a tour operator offers a free space, the tour group may decide to use it for the student concerned.
  • For recipients of unemployment benefit II or social money, social assistance, a child supplement or housing benefit, the costs for school trips lasting several days can be covered. An entitlement may also exist if the child or his or her parents do not otherwise receive any of the above-mentioned social benefits, but are unable to cover the need for the school trip. The parents must submit a written declaration of consent for their child's participation in the school trip, which also serves as a promise to pay for the costs. With the written consent, the child is bindingly registered for the class trip. Therefore, the costs must also be paid (pro rata) if the child falls ill before the school trip and stays at home or returns earlier.
