Biowaste disposal

Source: BUS Rheinland-Pfalz

The disposal of biowaste from private households is the responsibility of the districts and independent cities. Regulations for the management of biowaste are laid down in the individual waste disposal statutes and fee statutes.
This includes, among other things, information on waste charges, waste containers (organic bin, ordering option), waste calendar (collection intervals), existing collection and delivery systems for organic waste (e.B green waste).
Insofar as no organic waste bin is yet offered by the public waste disposal provider, there are alternative disposal offers in the delivery system (such as the disposal options for garden waste at recycling yards or container services) as well as in some cases the use of an organic bin from private providers (commercial or non-profit collection).
In addition to the disposal of organic waste by the organic waste bin, most statutes mention self-composting as an option for the self-recycling of organic waste. If there is a proven possibility of self-recycling by composting on his own property, the citizen can be exempted from the obligation to connect to the organic bin.
The separate collection and subsequent recycling of biodegradable waste (organic kitchen waste and garden waste) has several advantages for the environment: it reduces the amount of residual waste and simplifies the treatment of residual waste. The separate collection simplifies the high-quality recycling of organic waste through fermentation. In addition, the humus components and nutrients contained in the biowaste can be returned to the natural cycle as a fermentation substrate or compost.

Preliminary remark

By treating organic waste in the fermentation plant and then composting it, invasive neophytes such as Japanese, Sakhalin and bastard knotweed, giant hogweed, mugwort, Indian balsam and ragwort are rendered harmless. These can therefore be disposed of in the organic waste garbage can without any problems.

What belongs in the green organic waste garbage can?

All easily decomposable organic waste from the kitchen (in normal household quantities) and garden belongs in the green organic waste garbage can.

  • Solid food waste, bread and cake leftovers
  • Egg shells
  • Coffee and tea grounds with filter
  • Fruit and vegetable waste
  • Potato peelings
  • tropical fruits
  • Green cuttings and leaves from the garden
  • Lawn cuttings
  • Cut flowers and flower stalks
  • Kitchen paper in small quantities
  • Newspaper for wrapping moist organic materials

What should I bear in mind with the organic waste garbage can?

  • Place the organic waste garbage can in a shady location.
  • Only put in rotting organic materials such as kitchen, garden and green waste.
  • It is not permitted to put in large quantities of food waste, e.g. from canteen kitchens or restaurants. These must be disposed of separately (food waste recycler).
  • Do not fill in material that is too wet (no soups and sauces or similar), as wetness leads to the development of odors. In general, the drier the material, the fewer odor problems in summer and frost problems in winter.
  • Spray out or clean the container after every third or fourth emptying.
  • In the cold season, lining the garbage can with several layers of newspaper prevents the organic waste from freezing to the bottom of the garbage can.
  • Very moist biowaste can be placed in the bin wrapped in newspaper.
  • Never put organic waste in (compostable) plastic bags in the garbage can! Please use newspaper or compostable paper bags.
  • Animal carcasses and parts must not be composted. These can be disposed of at rendering plants.
  • If problems with insect infestation occur in some cases, a dose of lime will help. However, aggressive quicklime or caustic lime should not be used due to the risk of chemical burns.

When is the organic waste garbage can emptied?

With the exception of the summer months, the green organic waste garbage can is emptied every two weeks. During the months of June, July, August and September, the bin is emptied weekly (see disposal calendar for dates). The bin must be ready for collection by 06.00 a.m. at the latest

What is not allowed in the organic waste garbage can?

Printed matter e.g: Catalogs and magazines (colored) DISPOSAL VIA BAG COLLECTION/ TRANSPARENT RECYCLABLE BAG

Recyclables e.g.: plastic bags, glass, metal, composite materials (e.g. milk cartons), plastics, cardboard DISPOSAL VIA TRANSPARENT/YELLOW RECYCLABLE BAGS or garbage can

Residual waste e.g: Ashes, diapers, sweepings, light bulbs, vacuum cleaner bags, wallpaper remnants, cigarette ash and filters, small animal litter, textile remnants, rubber or leather, porcelain or ceramics DISPOSAL VIA RESIDUAL WASTE BIN

Hazardous waste e.g: Chemicals, batteries, paints, fertilizers, pesticides DISPOSAL THROUGH THE SPECIAL WASTE BIN

Mineral materials e.g: Construction waste DISPOSAL THROUGH THE CONSTRUCTION WASTE RECYCLING FACILITY

How can I dispose of green waste from my garden?

Every household in the city has the option of delivering standard household quantities(up to 1000 kg) of green waste free of charge to the "Am Hölzel" recycling center (this also includes roots that are free of soil). The prerequisite is that the property on which the green waste is produced is connected to the public waste disposal system via an EWL waste garbage can. Collection is possible as a green waste bag or bundle together with the organic waste garbage can. You can purchase green waste bags and stamps from the building yard, the EWL, the citizens' office (town hall), the "Horstring" office (Danziger Platz 13-15) and the local council offices.

Pest infestation

Correct disposal

In order to contain the spread of the pest (e.g. box tree moth), the EWL advises regular inspection of box tree plants for damage. Typical symptoms are fine-threaded webs and droppings on leaves and shoots. The caterpillars of the box tree moth are around five centimetres long and green with dark spots. They first feed on the leaves and then on the green bark of the branches. Consistent pruning of infested plants is important, but the branches must be disposed of properly:
