School transport Apply for reimbursement
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzIn principle, all pupils are entitled to pupil transport if they are resident in Rhineland-Palatinate and the way to school without the use of a means of transport is unreasonable.
For pupils at upper secondary level, pupil transport is only granted if they fall below a certain income limit, the amount of which is regulated in a statutory ordinance. An appropriate own contribution should be levied. This is determined by the providers of school transport themselves and can therefore vary in the various districts and independent cities.
School transport costs will be covered from the time of application. A retroactive grant is not possible. For this reason, the application should be submitted before the beginning of the school year. The application must normally be submitted once for the duration of the school visit. A new application is required in particular if the pupil's place of residence changes, the pupil changes schools or the mode of transport changes. Changes to the information provided in the application for school transport (in particular in the event of change of residence, change of school, termination of school attendance) must be communicated to the district administration or city administration immediately.
If the conditions on which the approval of the pupil transport costs were based (e.g. length of the way to school, actual school attendance) cease to apply, the transport costs shall cease to be borne from the time when the change occurred.
As a rule, the application for pupil transport must be submitted to the education office of the district or the independent city. The required application forms are also available at school.
The way to school is not reasonable for the student. This is the case if the footpath between home and primary school is longer than 2 kilometres, in secondary schools longer than 4 kilometres or the way to school is particularly dangerous. In the case of pupils with special educational needs, the type and degree of disability are also decisive for the reasonableness of the way to school.
The entitlement to pupil transport refers to the nearest school of the chosen type of school.
Travel costs are only covered up to the nearest school. If a school other than the nearest school is attended, the costs will only be covered to the extent that they would be incurred if the nearest school was attended.
When attending upper secondary level (grades 11 to 13) at grammar schools and integrated comprehensive schools as well as full-time courses at technical colleges, for which a completed vocational training is not mandatory, vocational grammar schools, higher vocational schools, technical colleges and vocational colleges, an income limit must be met in addition to the above-mentioned requirements in order to be entitled to reimbursement of travel costs.
The income limit depends on the family circumstances and amounts to
€26,500.00 €22,750.00 €26,250.00 €26,500.00for students in a household with

(*or one parent living with a partner)
As a rule, the gross income is taken into account as income. In principle, the income of the calendar year before last is decisive. Further information can be obtained from the district administration. If the income limit is exceeded, no costs for transportation can be covered by the district.
Note:
The Vulkaneifel district administration now offers you the option of applying for transportation costs to be covered conveniently online. Taking into account the submission deadline, applications can be submitted in this way around the clock, 7 days a week.
Please ask the education office of the district or the independent city for which documents you need to bring with you. It is also possible that the school itself can provide information about this.
There are no fees.
The application should be submitted before the start of the school year.
The application forms are provided by the providers of school transport (district or district-free city).
In the case of applications for pupil transport that is granted on the basis of income (upper secondary level), the relevant income tax assessment must be attached to the application.
How is transportation provided?
In the district, almost all trips to schools are integrated into the public transportation system. In principle, the entitlement to transport is therefore realized by ordering tickets for the use of public transport from the respective transport provider and covering the costs. The tickets are always valid for one school year.
If transportation with existing public transport is not reasonable, school buses should always be used. In certain cases, travel costs for private transportation can also be covered.
