Local public transport
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzLocal public transport plays an important role in Rhineland-Palatinate. The entire federal state is connected by the transport associations with tram, suburban train and bus.
There are a total of five Rhineland-Palatinate transport associations.
In accordance with the Rhineland-Palatinate Local Transport Act (NVG), which came into force on 01.01.1996, the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm is responsible for local public transport. It performs this task as a free self-administration task within the scope of its financial capacity.
The districts of Bernkastel-Wittlich and Trier-Saarburg, the Vulkaneifelkreis, the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm and the city of Trier joined forces with the transport companies in the Trier region to form the Verkehrsverbund Region Trier (VRT) on December 8, 2000. With the start of the association on 01.01.2001, a zone tariff was introduced which is used by all transport companies belonging to the VRT. A standardized range of tickets, much lower fares and various other improvements contribute to making public transport more attractive.
In addition, the Eifel district is a statutory member of the Rhineland-Palatinate North Local Rail Passenger Transport Association, which is responsible for the organization of local public transport services.
Implementation of the new Rhineland-Palatinate North public transport concept
As part of the implementation of the new public transport concept, the entire bus route network in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm will be fundamentally restructured by December 2022. In addition to an optimized link between the rail and bus modes of transport, the main aim is to create an area-wide regular service that, in addition to the busy regional main lines, also connects the smaller villages to the higher-level route network via supplementary lines in the form of bus or on-call bus services.
