Having an expired driver's license reissued
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzDriving licenses issued from 19.01.2013 are valid for 15 years.
If the validity of the driving license is about to expire or has expired, you must apply for a new driving license, unless you renounce the driving license.
However, the time limit only affects the driving license document, not the underlying driving license.

Special information for Administrative District Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm
After your documents have been checked, your new EU driving license will be ordered by the driving license office. After your new driving license has been sent to the administration by the Federal Printing Office, we will inform you and you can come and collect it by making an appointment.
If you select direct mailing when you submit your application, you will receive your driving license directly from the Bundesdruckerei to your home address once it has been issued. This takes approx. 10 days after the driving license office has placed the order. This saves you another trip to the administration, where we will retain your old driver's license and issue you with the new one.
(Direct mailing is not possible when applying at the branch office in Prüm).
The responsible authority in Rhineland-Palatinate is the district administration, in large cities belonging to a district or independent of a district the city administration.
- You are resident in Germany.
- You must be the holder of a temporary driving license issued from 19.01.2013.
- Identity card or passport, if necessary with confirmation of registration
- a current biometric photo (size 45 x 35 mm, portrait format, front view); information and examples can be found in the photo sample table of the Bundesdruckerei (Federal Printing Office)

- If applicable, an extract from the local driving license register of the driving license authority that issued your driving license
- The so-called "index card transcript" is only required if your old driving license was not issued in the jurisdiction of the office now responsible and if it does not contain any information about when which driving license was issued to you.
- When exchanging due to the renewal of a truck driving license of the old classes 2 and 3 (special train combinations up to 18,500 kg) additionally:
- Certificate of a general medical examination (not older than 1 year at the time of application)
- Certificate of medical examination of eyesight or, if applicable, an ophthalmologist's certificate (not older than 2 years at the time of application)
- On reaching the age of 50, Class 2 (now C/CE) and the CE79 (7.5 T with trailer for a total of 18 tons) included in Class 3 expire.
- After expiry after the age of 50, these classes can only be extended after examination of the individual case (this extension is possible at the latest at the end of the 60th year of life without an examination, if no extension has been carried out so far.

Remark: The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt).
