Expansion of digital infrastructures in Rhineland-Palatinate (broadband)

Source: BUS Rheinland-Pfalz

The state government of Rhineland-Palatinate is promoting the establishment and expansion of digital infrastructures as well as the construction of WLAN hotspots in municipal areas. The availability of high bandwidths (50 Mbit/s) increased by 78.7 percentage points from mid-2011 to the end of 2018 to 85.5 percent from the end of 2018. Rhineland-Palatinate is thus in first place in terms of growth in the federal states during this period.

In the coming years, the network infrastructure change from copper to fiber optics will be the focus of all efforts. The network alliance for Rhineland-Palatinate from the telecommunications industry, its associations, the municipal leaders and the chambers has also agreed on this together with the state.

Special information for Administrative District Bernkastel-Wittlich

Broadband coverage in the district

The Federal Republic of Germany is on its way to becoming a digital society. Ongoing digitalization is now permeating almost every area of daily life and business. Information and communication technology is also opening up new opportunities for citizens and companies. In order to make the best possible use of these opportunities today and in the future, a nationwide broadband supply is required, especially in rural regions. High-performance broadband networks must be available to all citizens, companies and important public institutions in order to ensure participation in public, social and economic life in the future.

In order to ensure the future viability of the rural regions in our district, in addition to the self-economic expansion of the telecommunications companies, funding projects of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport and the State Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Transformation and Digitization (formerly the Ministry of the Interior and Sport) are being used to promote broadband and fibre optic expansion in areas where self-economic expansion has not yet taken place.

The first foundation stone for a digitized district in the future has already been laid with the implementation of the Weiße-Flecken funding programme. In addition, the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich will continue to promote fiber optic expansion as part of the so-called grey-spot funding program, which can be defined as a follow-up project.

If you have any queries regarding self-economical expansion measures, please contact your responsible association municipality / the single municipality of Morbach or the town of Wittlich. For further information on subsidized expansion, please contact us.
