For persons who are in possession of a foreign hunting license and wish to hunt in Germany, special regulations apply depending on the individual case.
Anyone practising hunting must carry a hunting license in their name. The hunting license is issued by the lower hunting authority responsible for the applicant's place of residence for a maximum of three hunting years or as a daily hunting license for fourteen consecutive days.
The hunting license is valid for the entire federal territory. The first issue of a hunting license is dependent on the applicant having passed a hunting examination in Germany.

Hunting license for foreigners

The hunting license is valid for the entire federal territory and is issued by the competent lower hunting authority in whose district the applicant primarily intends to hunt.
If the applicant has passed a hunting examination in his/her home country that is equivalent to the German hunting examination, the hunting license is issued as a foreigner's annual hunting license for a maximum of three hunting years. If this hunting examination is not equivalent, the hunting license may be issued as a daily hunting license for foreigners for fourteen consecutive days.

Change from the hunting year 2023/2024
From the 2023/2024 hunting year, hunting licenses will only be issued or renewed for a maximum of one year. The background to the change is that non-German nationals in the Federal Republic of Germany cannot be directly checked for their reliability. The reliability of this group of people is therefore checked by issuing hunting licenses in their home country. The basic requirement for the recognition of foreign hunting examinations remains in place.
