Doctors from the public health service examine the children before starting school for health impairments that are likely to influence their ability to go to school. The primary objective of this study is therefore to be able to initiate treatments or support measures in good time before the start of school.
The doctors do not decide whether a child is enrolled in school or deferred from school attendance. The decision is made by the headmistress. As a rule, a deferral only takes place if this is necessary for health reasons.
The school enrolment examination is a compulsory examination for all children who are required to attend school in the coming school year or who are registered early as "optional children".
The school enrolment examination is carried out by doctors from the public health service.
The aim of this examination is to determine a child's level of development in order to identify possible health and school-related impairments and developmental risks that could make a successful start to school more difficult.
If a child has abnormalities relevant to school or if health problems are already known, recommendations for support measures can be made.
Procedure of the school enrollment examination:
a) Medical history with a check of the vaccination status
b) Examination of vision and hearing
c) Testing of age-appropriate skills with the "Sopess program"
(Sopess = social pediatric developmental screening for school entry examinations)
d) Advice for parents with appropriate recommendations
The results are communicated to the school management in a school doctor's report.
In the case of special educational needs, a special educational assessment is recommended.
The school management decides on any deferral from school attendance.
