Drinking water analysis
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzDrinking water from the public supply is regularly officially monitored and analyzed in certified drinking water laboratories on the basis of legal regulations from the Drinking Water Ordinance.
- The checks and analyses are carried out by the drinking water supply company itself or commissioned by it, as well as by the public health department, which is responsible for the proper implementation of the requirements of the Drinking Water Ordinance.
- Drinking water samples are taken regularly in the drinking water treatment plants, at various points in the supply network and in selected public buildings.
- The public health department is the responsible monitoring authority and decides on a case-by-case basis how to proceed if a limit value is not met. It receives technical support from the State Investigation Office in Koblenz.
Information on the quality of the drinking water (degree of hardness, analysis results, etc.) can be obtained from the respective drinking water supply company.
The point of contact for problems with the public drinking water supply is the local public health department (district administration) and the relevant drinking water supply company.
If problems arise in connection with the domestic drinking water installation, the responsibility lies with the respective house owner.
The costs for the official drinking water tests are borne by the drinking water supplier.
The respective testing agency will inform you about the costs of self-initiated testing (e.g. of the domestic installation) by recognized drinking water laboratories.
General information on drinking water can also be obtained from the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW) and the Federal Environment Agency.
A list of drinking water testing laboratories approved in Rhineland-Palatinate can be found on the website of the State Investigation Office.
Laboratories that have received their approval in another federal state may also carry out drinking water tests in Rhineland-Palatinate.

"Health - in the sense of the well-being of body, mind and soul - is the highest good of mankind." Facilities and measures to maintain health and restore it as best as possible (prevention) should make a significant contribution to this. Prevention at various levels is therefore a key focus of the work of the public health service:
These measures are intended to prevent the occurrence of a disease or other health disorders, to detect the development of a disease as early as possible through early detection and appropriate treatment steps and to influence the course of the disease favorably through treatment or, in the case of people who are already ill, to prevent relapses and developments into a chronic disease.
The public health service has various tasks or offers in this area. Examples include the promotion of child health, the prevention and control of communicable diseases, vaccinations, advice and care for mental illnesses and disabilities or drinking water monitoring.
