Local public transport

Source: BUS Rheinland-Pfalz

Local public transport plays an important role in Rhineland-Palatinate. The entire federal state is connected by the transport associations with tram, suburban train and bus.

There are a total of five Rhineland-Palatinate transport associations.

Special information for Administrative District Rhein-Lahn-Kreis

Fundamentals

According to the Local Transport Act, the Rhine-Lahn district is responsible for local public transport within the scope of its financial resources. In addition, the Rhine-Lahn district also performs this task through its membership of the Zweckverband Schienenpersonennahverkehr Rheinland-Pfalz Nord (SPNV Nord, www.spnv-nord.de) and as a shareholder of Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Mosel GmbH (VRM, www.vrminfo.de).

Situation in the RLK
Local public transport in the Rhine-Lahn district is characterized by the two railroad lines on the Rhine and Lahn. No final decision has yet been made on the reactivation of the railroad line in the Aartal valley from Diez to Hahnstätten.
In addition, the five regional bus lines between Braubach and Nastätten (540), Nassau and Nastätten (550), St. Goarshausen and Limburg (580), Michelbach-Hahnstätten-Limburg (570) and Katzenelnbogen - Laufenselden (574) have a supra-regional function and offer timely connections to rail transport. This is also provided by the Regio line X76 of the Rhine-Main transport association with a cross-border fare system, which connects Nastätten with Wiesbaden.
Numerous local bus lines extend the bus service. In addition to serving schools and daycare centers, they provide the population in the individual local communities with connections to the relevant basic service center every two hours from Monday to Friday. Many of these journeys are carried out as call line journeys (ALF) so that the buses are only used when necessary and there are no unnecessary empty runs.
The car and passenger ferries on the Rhine at Kaub, St. Goarshausen and Filsen serve as a further link.
The scheduled services are supplemented by public private transport provided by the cab and hire car industry. Since August 2010, the municipality of Katzenelnbogen has also been operating an Aar-Einrichbus.
School transport forms the backbone of public transport in the Rhine-Lahn district. Pupils account for more than 80% of all passengers in the area. School transport is therefore the economic basis for maintaining a public transport service there.
