Existing driving license extended by category C, C1, CE or C1E
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzTo drive trucks or vehicle combinations consisting of a truck and a trailer, you need an extended driving license for category C, CE, C1 or C1E. You can apply for the extension of your driving license at the driving license authority in your place of residence. If your driving license is extended to include categories C, CE, C1 or C1E, it will be issued for a limited period of 5 years. You must apply for an extension before this period expires.
Depending on the category, the extended driving license entitles you to drive various trucks or vehicle combinations consisting of a truck and a trailer. To apply for an extension, you must meet various requirements.
Class C driving license:
- Motor vehicles with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons and a maximum of 8 seats in addition to the driver's seat
- Trailers with a total weight of up to 750 kg
- Required driving license: Class B
- Minimum age: 21 years or 18 years if you drive a truck professionally
Class CE driving license:
- Motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 tons and a maximum of 8 seats in addition to the driver's seat
- Trailers with a total weight of more than 750 kg
- Required driving license: Class C
- Minimum age: 21 years or 18 years if you drive a truck professionally
Class C1 driving license:
- Light commercial vehicles with a gross weight of between 3.5t and 7.5t and a maximum of 8 seats in addition to the driver's seat
- Trailers with a total weight of up to 750 kg
- Required driving license: Class B
- Minimum age: 18 years
Class C1E driving license:
- Light commercial vehicles with a gross weight between 3.5t and 7.5t and a maximum of 8 seats apart from the driver's seat
- Trailers with a total weight of more than 750 kg, maximum weight equal to the unladen weight of the towing vehicle
- Maximum total weight of the combination of 12 tons
- Required driving license: Class C1
- Minimum age: 18 years
