Extending a residence permit for the purpose of training
Source: BUS Rheinland-PfalzYou must extend your residence permit in good time if you wish to continue your training in Germany. This applies to all foreign nationals from non-EU and non-EEA countries who are training in Germany.
With this permit you may
- take part in language courses that do not prepare you for university (intensive language course in German),
- attend school in exceptional cases or
- undergo in-company training and further training if the Federal Employment Agency agrees.
You must apply for an extension in writing to the relevant office.
You will then either receive the requested extension or a rejection notice.
The responsibility lies with the foreigners authority of the district administration and the city administration of the independent city.
Prerequisites for the extension of the residence permit are:
- You fulfill the passport and visa requirements.
For the passport requirement, it is sufficient if you have a replacement identity document. - Your livelihood is secured.
- There are no grounds for deportation against you.
- Your stay does not jeopardize or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
- You fulfill the admission requirements for the relevant training.
- You are not unreasonably delaying your training and
- You do not exceed the average duration of training.
- Proof of fulfillment of passport and visa requirements
- Proof of secure means of subsistence
- Proof that there are no grounds for deportation against you
- Proof that you do not jeopardize or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany
- Proof that you meet the admission requirements for training (original)
- Proof that you
- will not unreasonably delay your training and
- do not exceed the average duration of training
The Foreigners' Registration Office will inform you of the specific documents you need to submit. The interest in deportation will also be examined by the Aliens Department. There is no need to provide evidence that this is the case and that no interests of the Federal Republic of Germany are affected.
- Extension for up to three months: EUR 65.00
- Extension for more than three months: EUR 80.00

From 01.05.2025, only digital photos may be used to apply for passports, ID cards, travel documents and electronic residence permits.
At the Citizens' Registration Office, there is currently only a recording device in the Citizens' Service at the Kaiserstraße location. If the appointment takes place at the Foreigners' Registration Office or at one of the local offices, a digital photo must be taken beforehand in a photo studio or drugstore. We are no longer allowed to use printed photos. We will not be able to process your application without a digital photo.
