Vehicle registration: Re-registration in another registration district with application for a new license plate
Source: Serviceportal Rheinland-PfalzIf a keeper has moved to another registration district, he must inform the registration authority responsible for the new place of residence or registered office of his new address and have the vehicle documents (registration certificates or vehicle registration document and vehicle registration document) corrected. In addition, he must apply for the assignment of a new license plate if he does not want to continue using the previous license plate.
Special information for District-free City Mainz
A transfer of registration is the registration of a used vehicle. A vehicle must be re-registered if there has been a change of owner or a change of residence. The following distinctions must be noted:
- Transfer of a vehicle with a foreign, German license plate to Mainz with change of owner with change of license plate
- Transfer of a vehicle with a foreign, German license plate to Mainz without change of owner:inside with change of license plate
- Since January 1, 2015, the obligation to change the registration number when changing residence without a change of owner has been lifted nationwide. If owners of registered vehicles move within Germany, they can take/keep the license plate with them if they wish. However, the vehicle must still be re-registered in Mainz.

Prerequisites:
- Owner:in of the vehicle has their main residence in Mainz.
- The registered office or branch office is in Mainz.
- A valid general inspection for the vehicle is available.
- There must be no motor vehicle tax arrears.
- All overdue fees incurred in connection with a registration must have been paid.
The re-registration of a vehicle and the new registration number must be applied for at the registration authority responsible for the place of residence (main residence within the meaning of the Federal Registration Act).
In the case of legal persons, traders and self-employed persons with a fixed place of business, the authority of the registered office or place of the establishment involved shall be competent.
You must have already registered at your new place of residence / company headquarters.
- valid identity card or passport with the original of the last registration certificate of the place of residence; foreign nationals need a valid identity document with a current registration certificate
- a power of attorney if an authorised representative submits the application (the authorised representative's identity card and a copy of the vehicle owner's identity card are required)

for underage vehicle owners:
- additional declaration of consent of both parents or guardians (if applicable custody judgment) and their identity card/passport with registration certificate
Special information for District-free City Mainz
- SEPA direct debit mandate for vehicle tax (form available in the "Forms" section at the bottom of this page or at your local registration office)
If represented by an authorized person additionally
- ID document of the authorized person (and the person granting power of attorney)
- Signed declaration of power of attorney
In the case of registration for minors, additionally
- written consent of both legal guardians

- Power of attorney of the managing director or authorized signatory with ID (copy) in the case of registration by a third party

- For the cab or car rental business: original or copy of the license certificate
For liberal professions (e.g. lawyers, doctors)
- If possible, current proof of freelance status or self-employment
For professions with business registration (e.g. e. K.)
- Business registration (not older than 3 years; if necessary, have the trade office confirm that it is up to date)
- For cab or car rental business: original or copy of license certificate
For registered associations (e. V.)
- Extract from the register of associations
- Power of attorney of the person representing with ID (copies) in the case of registration by third parties
- ID of the authorized person
For companies under civil law (GbR)
- Overview of all shareholders (shareholder agreement)
- Power of attorney and declaration as to which natural person is to be authorized (signed by all partners)
- Identification of all shareholders
- For cab or rental car business: original or copy of license certificate
Special vehicle use
- If the business suggests a special vehicle use (cab, rental car, self-drive rental vehicle, public bus, passenger transport), the completed and signed "Vehicle use" form (form in the "Forms" section at the bottom of this page or available from the local licensing authority)
The fees for re-registration are based on the scale of charges for road traffic measures. The amount of the fees may vary depending on the case constellation. Specific information on this can be obtained from the locally competent licensing authority.
Special information for District-free City Mainz

Standard fee: 30,30 Euro - Transfer of a vehicle with a foreign, German license plate to Mainz without change of owner
Standard fee: 28.30 euros - Additional fees may apply depending on the individual case.
- The fees do not include the costs for license plates.

The online appointment calendar is not available for car dealerships, registration services and motor vehicle dealers. You can hand in or collect these processes between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. without an appointment.
