Equivalence can be determined if you have successfully completed relevant training in geriatric care and this training does not have any significant differences compared to the training in Rhineland-Palatinate in terms of duration and content.

If there are significant differences, you would have to complete an adaptation period or take an aptitude test if the professional experience to be proven is not suitable to compensate for the significant differences (depending on the type, duration and timeliness of the professional experience).

• Proof of habitual residence (main residence) in Rhineland-Palatinate or proof of intended exercise of the profession in Rhineland-Palatinate, e.g. through correspondence with a potential employer in Rhineland-Palatinate.
• Officially certified copy of the identity card or a comparable identification document
• In the case of name changes compared to the proof of qualifications, also: civil registry document on name, place of birth and date of birth (e.g. birth/marriage certificate, excerpt from the family book, with German translation)
• Curriculum vitae in German with detailed information about school education, vocational training(s) and previous activities
• Officially certified copy of the proof of education (e.g. diploma) of the completed training in the national language and in German translation by a court-sworn or publicly appointed translator
• Proof from the training institution (school) of the content and scope of the training completed (type and scope (hours) of the subjects, type and scope of practical training) in the national language and in German translation by a court-sworn or publicly appointed translator (or, if applicable, Europass job description)
• Proof of your previous activities in geriatric care, with German translation by a court-sworn or publicly appointed translator

Comparable training qualifications acquired outside Germany can be recognised as equivalent.

If you have completed a corresponding training outside Germany, you may be able to work as a service provider in Germany temporarily and occasionally without permission (in accordance with EU law). You must report this to the competent authority in advance.

Can qualifications from general nursing be used for recognition as a geriatric care assistant?

No. Recognition for a profession in geriatric care requires specialisation in training in gerontology, i.e. there must be a focus on the care and care of the elderly. If the latter is not the case, it is also impossible to compensate for significant differences through professional experience.

What medical and nursing skills are expected for the practice of the profession?

1. Use aids to determine vital signs adequately,

2. Support and encourage independence in food intake,

3. Serve food and drink in a resident-oriented manner,

4. Carry out care measures in case of problems and impairments in excretion,

5. Carry out blood glucose measurement, interpret the values, document them and react on the basis of legal provisions,

6. Properly carry out injections of insulin according to a doctor's prescription,

7. Apply heat and cold carriers according to a doctor's prescription,

8. use care-supporting measures for health promotion and disease prevention, in particular embrocations, medical baths and inhalations in compliance with medical prescriptions,

9. administer drops/ointments to the eyes and ears according to a doctor's prescription,

10. administer prescribed medication or monitor its use,

11. Put on and take off compression stockings,

12. Remove supporting and stabilizing bandages,

13. Suprapubic catheter (without wound care),

14. Treat people with percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) (without wound care) and

15. Perform subcutaneous injections of heparin.
