Aircraft radio certificates: Apply for admission to the exam

You need an aeronautical radio certificate from the Federal Network Agency to carry out aeronautical radio services on the ground and in the air. You will receive the certificate after passing the aeronautical radio examination.
To be admitted to the examination, you must submit an application to the Federal Network Agency. You can currently take the exam at 7 locations of the Federal Network Agency. The locations are Berlin, Bremen, Eschborn, Cologne, Reutlingen, Munich and Leipzig.

There are various aviation radio certificates in Germany:

Restricted radiotelephony certificate II for the aeronautical radio service (BZF II): This certificate entitles you to use radiotelephony within the Federal Republic of Germany in German according to visual flight rules.
Restricted radiotelephony certificate I for the aeronautical radio service (BZF I): The certificate entitles you to radiotelephony in German and English according to visual flight rules.
Restricted radiotelephony certificate E for the aeronautical radio service (BZF E): The certificate entitles you to radiotelephony in English according to visual flight rules.
General radiotelephony certificate for the aeronautical radio service (AZF): The certificate entitles you to radiotelephony in German and English in accordance with visual and instrument flight rules.
General radiotelephony certificate E for the aeronautical radio service (AZF E): The certificate entitles you to radiotelephony in English in accordance with visual and instrument flight rules.

You can only hold one aeronautical radio certificate at a time. As a rule, you must pass a full examination for this certificate. If you have not passed a full examination, you can take a retake examination. You will then have to take an additional examination for another aircraft radio certificate - for example, if you want to fly according to instrument flight rules in addition to visual flight rules.

For aeronautical radio in English (e.g. AZF E or BZF E), you must prove your knowledge of the English language (Language Proficiency - LP) in addition to the aeronautical radio certificate. To do this, you take the LP exam at the Federal Network Agency.
You can also take the examination for your aeronautical radio certificate as part of a pilot examination. If you have already passed the theoretical examination of a state aviation authority, you can also register for the practical examination to obtain an aeronautical radio certificate. To do this, you will need a certificate from the state aviation authority confirming that you have passed the theoretical examination.

You can apply for admission to the flight radio exam online or by post or e-mail.
You always need an examination date. Arrange an examination appointment at a Federal Network Agency location. This can be done by telephone, e-mail or on site. If you do not arrange an examination appointment, the selected examination center will contact you with a proposed date.
Pay the application fee once the examination date has been confirmed by the Federal Network Agency.
Online application

Call up the online application on the federal portal. This will guide you step by step through the necessary information, which you can enter electronically.
Upload the required documents as a file and submit the application.
The Federal Network Agency will send you the approval for the examination and the time and place of the examination by post or e-mail.
You will receive the result of the test directly on site.
After a successful examination, you will receive the certificate directly on site.
If you fail the exam, you can repeat it once. You only have to repeat the parts of the exam that you did not pass. To do this, you must submit a new application.

Application by post or e-mail:

Go to the website of the Federal Network Agency and download the relevant application form. Print out the application.
Send the completed and signed application to the relevant examination center.
The Federal Network Agency will send you admission to the examination and the time and place of the examination by post or e-mail.
Once you have successfully passed the examination, you will receive your certificate directly on site.
If you fail the exam, you can repeat it once. You only have to repeat the parts of the exam that you did not pass. To do this, you must submit a new application.

To apply for admission to the BZF II, BZF I and BZF E examination:

You are at least 15 years old or will reach your 15th birthday in 3 months at the latest.

To apply for admission to the additional examination to obtain the BZF I:

You are at least 15 years old or will reach your 15th birthday in 3 months at the latest.
You already have a radio pilot certificate or
a German pilot's license.

To apply for admission to the additional examination for the AZF:

You are at least 18 years old or will reach your 18th birthday in 3 months at the latest.
You already have a radio operator's certificate or
a German pilot's license.

For the application for admission to the additional examination to acquire AZF E:

You are at least 18 years old or will reach your 18th birthday in 3 months at the latest.
You already have the BZF E aircraft radio certificate or
a German pilot's license if you have passed the BZF E examination at the state aviation authority.

Admission to the examination for the acquisition of aviation radio certificates:

Copy of your identity card or passport

for additional examination BZF I:
- Copy of the already acquired aircraft radio certificate (BZF II or BZF E) or
- Copy of the pilot's license if you have acquired the radiotelephony authorization from the state aviation authority
for additional AZF examination:
- Copy of the radiotelephony certificate already obtained (BZF I, BZF II or BZF E) or
- Copy of the pilot's license if you have acquired the radiotelephony authorization from the state aviation authority

Admission to the examination for the acquisition of BZF E and AZF E

Copy of your identity card or passport
Proof that you have paid the application fee:
- Payment slip or
- for online transfers: Copy of the transfer order
For additional check AZF E
- Copy of the BZF E or
- Copy of the pilot's license if you have completed the BZF E examination with the state aviation authority

Admission to the practical examination for the acquisition of aeronautical radio certificates for holders of a certificate from the state aviation authority

Copy of your identity card or passport
Proof that you have paid the application fee:

Certificate from the aviation authority of the country confirming that you have passed the theoretical pilot examination

Admission to the English language proficiency test (LP test)
