Equal opportunities and equality for women

Source: BUS Rheinland-Pfalz

The Basic Law stipulates the promotion of the legal and actual equality of women and men as a state task. The municipalities are also obliged to implement this constitutional mandate.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, the municipalities appoint municipal equal opportunities officers on the basis of the municipal and district regulations. Their task is to stand up for the rights and interests of the female inhabitants of the respective municipality. They ensure that the administration and political bodies take the interests of women and girls into account in their decisions. Through public relations work and events, they contribute to changing awareness in society. They support women seeking advice and interested women in confidential consultation hours. The range of topics includes issues such as reconciling work and family life, returning to work, separation and divorce, social benefits and experiences of violence. The equal opportunities officers also support regional initiatives, projects and plans to improve the situation of women and girls.

Special information for Administrative District Neuwied

In 1949, the Constituent Assembly enshrined equal rights between women and men in our Basic Law in Article 3, Paragraph 2.

tion: "Men and women shall have equal rights". 44 years later, the following text was added to the article: "The state shall promote the effective implementation of equal rights for women and men and shall work towards the elimination of existing disadvantages". This article is the basis for the work of the Equal Opportunities Commissioner.

Her task is to advise the administration and politicians, to be a point of contact and guide for those seeking help and to organize information events and campaigns to improve the social and societal situation of women.

On the basis of this constitutional mandate, the tasks were defined in more detail in Section 2, Paragraph 9 of the Landkreisordnung (LKO) and Section 2, Paragraph 6 of the
Gemeindeordnung (GemO). The municipal code applies to colleagues in the city of Neuwied and the association municipalities.

If the Equal Opportunities Officer is employed as a full-time Equal Opportunities Officer, the function of the official Equal Opportunities Officer can be transferred to her in accordance with the State Equal Opportunities Act (LGG).
