Alternative schools offer courses that correspond to the teaching and educational objectives of state schools. Compulsory schooling is fulfilled by attending an alternative school. In addition, alternative schools must be approved and receive financial support from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The school authorities supervise the alternative schools.
Supplementary schools are independent schools that offer a range of courses that are not available in the public school system. They supplement the public education system with their courses. The courses offered there are mainly in the field of vocational education such as:

- communication
- commercial sector, etc.
Compulsory school attendance can only be fulfilled at supplementary schools if this has been approved by the school. The school authorities must be notified of the operation of a supplementary school. The school authorities supervise the supplementary schools.
