Issuance of a certificate of marriageability for German citizens with residence, or habitual abode abroad.

The issuance of a certificate of marriageability is applied for at the competent registry office 1 in Berlin. If the examination shows that there is no impediment to the intended marriage under German law, and if the required information on the person of both spouses has been provided, the registry office will issue the requested certificate of marriageability.

• The person must have German citizenship.
• You must have your domicile and habitual residence abroad
• The intended marriage is to take place abroad
• The intended marriage must not be prevented by any reason according to German law.

• The requirements, type and format of the evidence to be provided and the examination of the prerequisites for marriage are governed by German law, as is the case for a German citizen.
• Evidence must be provided by means of public documents:
  • The civil status
  • The place of residence, habitual abode
  • The nationality
  • As well as, if applicable, the last marriages and/or civil partnerships and their dissolutions

Costs may be incurred for the issuance of a certificate of marriageability. Please contact your registry office.

After issuance, the certificate of marriageability has a validity for the period of six months.
